How to Focus with a Full Plate
When multiple tasks are calling for your attention, how can you focus on the items that matter most?
A long to-do list can add stress to anyone’s day. You may be unsure which task to tackle first and you may find your attention wandering throughout the day. Thankfully, you don’t have to let the pressure of a busy schedule get in the way of doing your best work.
You’ll improve your ability to keep your thoughts and schedule organized if you:
Use a Scheduling Resource.
Many people think they can remember all their personal, professional, and financial responsibilities by memory alone. But once you add the stress and pressures of life, these quickly can become a recipe for missed meetings and failing to pay bills on time! You’ll never forget a commitment again if you record all your appointments, due dates, social events, and other upcoming to-dos in one place. Whether you’re using an old-fashioned paper planner or the calendar app on your phone, use whatever resource works best for you.
Prioritize.
Don’t challenge yourself to do too much at once! No matter how much you apply yourself, you can only accomplish so much in a day. When planning your schedule, put the most time-sensitive tasks first. Similarly, if a task will be challenging or difficult, try to tackle it earlier in the day, when your mind and body are more energized. Break larger tasks into smaller, doable steps that you can focus on one at a time.
Reach Out.
You don’t have to face your full schedule alone! Your mentors can help you find a work-life balance and positive mindset that enables you to address your responsibilities with pep in your step. Your mentors can also help you organize your time in a way that keeps you on track with both your short- and long-term goals.
Don’t Sacrifice Self-Care.
No matter how busy you become, don’t ignore the needs of your mind and body. Pay attention to your physical and mental health. Pushing yourself for too long can increase your chances of becoming sick, getting injured, or burning out. On the other hand, exercising and eating well on a regular basis will increase your energy levels and support your ability to focus when faced with a busy schedule. If you don’t feel like you have enough time for self-care, collaborate and delegate to reduce the amount you have on your plate each week. Likewise, make time for regular personal growth and fulfillment. If you ignore your goals and passions, you’ll continue to feel them nagging for your attention. Even when the responsibilities and demands of life pile up, take time to do the things that make you feel happy and in tune with yourself.
